Rabbits…The New White Meat!

We are starting a rabbit farm. Christian and I purchased six rabbits – two males and four females because we read all the facts and success of rabbit breeding and nutrition of the meat. We wanted to give it a try before presenting it to the board but Mike came and he got so excited about it we are now in the process of building cages and a barn to house two hundred+ rabbits! He spoke with the young man we met that is breeding, raising, selling and educating people on the benefits of rabbits and was just as impressed as we are with his knowledge, his heart to educate poor Ugandans and his entrepreneurial spirit. He is a preacher’s kid also, and has a heart on fire for Jesus. Here are some of the facts:

Rabbit feeds include grass, weeds, garden waste, and concentrates like rabbit pellets. Moreover the carcasses of rabbit have very high meat to bone ratio in comparison with other meat producing livestock. Rabbit manure is high quality fertilizer, while utilization of rabbit skins to make hand bags, shoes and hats. (Just about every part of the rabbit is utilized).

Rabbit meat has less fat and cholesterol than red meat, higher health benefits. Apart from fish, rabbit meat has the highest amount of protein and contains the lowest fat than all other types of meat. It contains fewer calories and Sodium than other meats but contains more calcium and phosphorus (which is very good). And, it tastes like chicken!

Rabbit farming is lucrative because, as we all know, they produce abundantly and quickly! It takes only thirty days from conception to birth, and they can produce throughout the year. They grow and mature very fast, can be ready for eating and/or market in less than six months. The cost of raising forty rabbits is the equivalent to raising one cow. Rabbits convert up to twenty percent of the proteins they eat into body weight. That’s higher than any other animal! The two breeds we will mainly be breeding are the New Zealand White and California rabbits, they get huge! A mature rabbit can sell at $18-22 at market while only costing $1 a month to raise. It is easy to start-up and cheap to operate and maintain. After the costs of cages, food costs are relatively low or even free. We have abundant food already growing on our property, and see the benefit of employing widows to grow grasses or beans and maize to convert to pellets. We can also farm worms with the manure to process into the pellets.

So our plan is to breed and raise the rabbits, educate our neighbors on the nutritional value of the meat. As I have said, malnutrition is one of the biggest problems here. Most families NEVER get meat to eat. We could give them chickens or a cow but they will not eat them. They will hold on to them until they absolutely have to sell them when in need of money. With rabbits, they can start out with one male and two females and very quickly have enough meat to eat and some to sell. We are going to have a training program called 5 for 5 where at graduation of the program the person will receive five rabbits to breed and cages. They are to train someone and give five rabbits, and so on. We will be the buyers and to ensure they are keeping meat to eat, will put a limit on how much we will buy at one time. Part of the training will include record keeping to ensure there is no inbreeding and also to prevent breeding a female too often.

The urine sells for almost as high a price as the rabbit meat because it is an excellent fertilizer. In Kenya, urine sells higher than the meat!. There is a great market opening up in Kampala for urine, manure and meat. Hotels and supermarkets are begging for rabbit meat, the demand is much higher than the suppliers so we have no worry we can sell plenty of meat which in turn will allow us to put money back into projects, Another of goals is to be as self-sufficient as we can and not have to fully rely on donors to our projects. The skins can be sold, and we would like to donate or employee seamstresses to make moccasins for the babies to help prevent jiggers in their feet.

So, we believe this is going to be a fruitful endeavor and feel we have God’s blessing on it. We are praying that the main objective – to provide families a way to have more nutrition in their diets – will be accepted and flourish.

We have had two teams of workers for the past 10 days and they have worked hard. Christian has been cutting wood every day, 7 hours a day to make the cages! He has had three to four little helpers that have been underfoot and some days driving him crazy. But, these boys have no fathers and he knows that he can be a great influence on them and teach them early a skill that will help them in the future. Yesterday I missed a picture opportunity, Christian said he turned around and all three boys had pencils behind their ears just like he did! No wonder he keeps having to search for pencils! You can see how fast the work has been going by the before and after pics!

Happy Sunday!

Hope you have had a wonderful Sunday, a day of rest and a day to worship and praise our Lord!

We had an off day I guess you would say. Chris said the people in his bible study seemed like maybe they weren’t getting what he was saying. I told him not to worry about it, they were hearing God’s word and God says it will accomplish what he sent it out for. THEN I went to teach Sunday School and at the end of the story of the angel coming to Mary I asked a few questions and all I got was blank stares! There were over thirty little ones – under three, so it was loud, babies crying, Ms Betty moving them around. She is constantly moving kids from one place to another. And the older kids that were there I haven’t seen before and I think they were just there for food. They were rude to me as they left – didn’t even acknowledge when I said goodbye. But I had those words echoing in my mind that I had just said to Chris about his class! (Thank you God. Haha!) Some days are like that!

This week Raelee has been painting nails. I would say the women’s’ nails but I have seen a few guys around with green and blue pinky nails! She asked this morning if she could paint her friends nails and I said it was okay. About an hour later I walk outside and see women sitting at the picnic table. This is usually a sign someone has a problem and needs (or wants) something! They will sit there, watch us pass by doing this and that, and as soon as we go in or start on something – that is when they come! But as I got closer I saw that they were all painting their nails. Apparently Raelee had tired of it and she was in the barn helping her daddy! I had to run to keep from getting my nails glittered! The women had a ball doing each others nails, I think next time we go to Kampala we should get more polish! It seems the uglier the colors the more they like it! To each his own!

And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.  1 John 1:4

Sunday School

We had a great time in Sunday School this last Sunday in November. There are so many little ones that have been coming. Christian says it’s parents sending them so they have something to eat. That’s fine with me, they also get to hear the word of God and I believe it when He says In Isaiah 55:11

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Every time the kids hear the Word, tiny seeds are planted that when watered over time will sprout and bloom. One day they will fully understand what God was telling them through these stories. I am so encouraged every time we come together at their understanding of the message of the stories. And their memory of the scripture verses is just so awesome, even the very little ones remember! I am thankful I have this opportunity to help bring children closer to Jesus – though it is one of the biggest challenges I face in my life. I have always felt so inadequate to work with children, feel like that is just not my gift and have had to fill the void because there was no one else to do it. But apparently God has a different view of it – or maybe it’s just a lesson in obedience! I love the children, but I also pray that with mentoring the teenagers, they will one day be able to do most of the service – they are able to minister in ways I can not because of the culture differences. But I know I will always have a part in it because my heart desires all of them to have a better life and to follow Jesus!

but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”    Matthew 19:14

Iron Strengthens Iron

“Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17”

There is mutual benefit in the rubbing of two iron blades together; the edges become sharper, making the knives more efficient in their task to cut and slice. Likewise, the Word of God is a “double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12), and it is with this we are to sharpen one another. Week before last we had just that time, of fellowship and “sharpening” one another in the Lord and in the faith. Mike came to visit us for a week, and for me it was definitely a time of renewed energy and love for the work we are doing here for the building of God’s Kingdom, and a renewed resolve to stand strong in the hard times. He is a wise man, full of ideas and energy and it took me a week to recuperate from all the ideas! I am so thankful God brought Mike into my life almost twenty years ago, and thankful that we have been able to keep that connection over distance and years between us. I think it is very hard not to have a special bond with someone who introduces you to Jesus, someone who gave you a helping hand to pull you up from the bottom.

It was a great week, I was busy talking and cooking and cleaning so I didn’t get many pictures! So many people wanted to come by and greet Mike and tell him how thankful they are for The Mandate being here in their village. It was so good having him see all the things that have been happening in the year since he was here last and planning for the next year’s projects. We were excited to introduce him to a wonderful young man of faith that we have come to be friends with. He lives in Kampala and has a huge entrepreneurial spirit. He is educating and raising rabbits as a nutritional meat source and I think he made just as much an impression on Mike. It was a great afternoon of talking rabbits and Jesus!  I just wish it wasn’t once a year we get to see Mike – so many things to talk about in just a short amount of time!

New Gum Boots

We have had a great week with Mike Riordan here. I will be making a post all about the week with him, it has been so encouraging and has blessed us so much.

I wanted to go ahead and post our workers in their new rubber boots. They had a meeting with Mike the other morning and one of the things they asked for was gum boots! Since that was an easy to get and inexpensive request, we went and purchased each one a pair. I can’t tell you how excited they were over this small gesture, and they loved having their picture in them!

Wanna Drive?

This is a one lane road going into a roundabout. Today is the first time we’ve seen a traffic light being obeyed! In some places there are traffic cops but they usually cause more chaos! It seems there are no rules that are obeyed and everyone is in a big hurry! Taxi vans will pass on the shoulder of the road, we’ve seen trucks flipped over from trying to pass into oncoming traffic.I am glad my husband is a good driver, but I know it is stressful for him. I know one thing for sure, I will never drive in Kampala! I have driven in our village and now I am very admired by women there. I impressed quite a few people by backing all the way down our road and into our gates! But I repeat…I will never drive in Kampala!

Tale Of The Rooster

Richard gets my groceries, often. He knows I still get all my meat at the supermarket – frozen chicken and frozen hamburger. Since the truck broke down again this morning, I called for delivery. Among a few other things I asked him to get minced beef (hamburger) and one chicken. He arrives and is walking in to the house carrying a rooster by the feet! A live rooster! I know I looked at him like he had lost his mind while yelling for Chris to come get it. Richard asked if that was what I wanted and I asked him if I have ever asked for a live chicken?! He felt bad, I told him it was okay, we would eat it. Probably not, but I didn’t want him to feel worse! The only problem I have with eating the local chicken is that most of them are tough or rubbery due to only eating free range. Plus I’M not going to do the killing and cleaning! Ha!
I’m not sure how well having two roosters will go but we will see!

Choose This Day

Isaiah 54:17  “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord  and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

I’ve read this scripture many times, especially over the past few months. People have sent me this scripture to help encourage us. But on Monday while I was praying that Christian wouldn’t have to go to jail to stand for what he believes, I really started to wonder just what it means. Most people take it literally – that no physical harm can come to us because we are God’s children. But then when I read in John 16:33 it says I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” So, if Jesus says in this world we will have trouble and tribulation I take it that we may have physical harm, we will have hatred spewed against us and we will have times of deep pain. BUT there is no weapon that may be formed against us that can take eternity with Him away. We may suffer for a little while, but the reward is so much greater than any suffering we may face here. We can take great comfort when those weapons are being used against us that they won’t succeed in taking us out of the Father’s hands.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;” Ephesians 6:17

The weapons satan uses against us – his flaming darts – are many. Doubt, temptations, anger…like I said many. So I believe (my opinion!) that when we take up His shield, standing on His Word, we are able to withstand any weapon formed against us. This week we were able to withstand and avoid the temptations of self-righteousness in getting justice we think we deserve; anger that would take focus off of the One Christ that we are trying to be like; impatience; and worry. You do know worry is a sin, right? 🙂  We let this situation strengthen us and bring us closer to God rather than handle things in our own fleshly way. The many prayers for us also were answered with His protection around us. If we hadn’t decided to choose to act in a way pleasing to God, satan and his weapons could have won. God gives us free will, and everyday we have to choose whether we will serve Him or we will go our own way. We aren’t always successful in behaving as God would have us to, we are not perfect of ourselves, but these past few months have shown us for sure that when we choose to focus on God and not the problem, not the people causing the problems – there is a greater success than we can see with our eyes. And in greater ways than our minds can comprehend.

That’s my bible study to you today! The experiences we have in this life present you with a choice – get bitter or get better! I pray that through every situation God will help me to get better at serving Him!

The BS

The Bull Situation
There was a farmer had our bulls and Bogere was his name-o. A refusal here, an arrest warrant there and the bulls were brought back home-o….
To recap the first go round:
I want to say that with 30+ farmers, only 5 tried to cause trouble and when Christian went and confronted them, three ended up giving a portion. Their reasoning for not honoring their contract and trying to get us sent home is that we didn’t honor the contract by helping this second season. (Most farmers understood that it was our mistake – our misunderstanding of the seasons, but we would carry on with our agreement in March). Three farmers (including the ringleader) ended up giving some when they were confronted face to face. One ran away and didn’t even harvest his peanuts so they rotted in the field. And the one hold out is this guy. (Although all five are now out of the program.) He has made income plowing with our bulls in trade (we were told) for keeping them on his property. We have paid for the vet and Medicine when they were sick. They say hindsight is 20\20 but we had so many other things to deal with that we just let whatever had been going on previously to stand. But when he said he wasn’t going to give his half of his rice harvest, Christian told him the bulls had to come to our property. So started this stupid situation. Even after being arrested, he openly admitted to the police the first time that the bulls are Mandates. The bulls were returned and we thought that was the end.
Now I think it’s a matter of pride and embarrassment, he has pressed charges against us and the Chairman. He has four wives and 14+ offspring to support. He’s known to be a thief, his sons and own father have admitted it and have tried to get him to stop this. It’s not a matter of people disrespecting or denying our authority, it is one bad man who is desperate not to lose the moneymakers he’s had for 3+ years..

We got to learn first hand how the process works when there is a dispute. The police come to the place where the dispute is, and have a “court” procedure of sorts. Each side presents witnesses to the Chief of Police and another official. There were over one hundred people came as witnesses for Mandate. We didn’t ask them, when they found out what was going on they all volunteered to come. The accuser did not show, nor did he have any witnesses to stand with him. The best he could find was a man from another village and the police said he could not be heard anyway. The Chairman called Bogere and his excuse was he was at the police station talking to the police. He was demanded to get here and said he was on his way. While we were waiting, the Chairman (who you know is an elected official) took the two officials on a tour of the village to show the wells that Mandate has dug, the solar at the Maternity Ward and around our land. The accused never showed so the “program” began with a prayer from one of the farmers. (Praise the Lord!) Around ten-eleven people stood and bore witness to the help Mandate has brought to their community. What was so encouraging and humbling were ones that we didn’t know but had helped someone in their family, and it wasn’t even monetary help. It was praying with them when a loved one was sick, giving a ride to Kimuli’s dad when no Ugandan would because of the smell of his leg. The widow that cooks the Mandaze every week for the children at Sunday School told how much we have helped her by buying her sweet biscuits! She no longer has to walk all day through the village trying to sell them one by one. Another widow, Ms Betty gave witness that I buy mats from her so that she can eat. (Personally, we think if we just gave Ms Betty a chance at this guy she would straighten everything out! Haha!)

The Chief stopped the witnessing, he had gotten a pretty clear picture of our side, and he said that Bogere should have a chance at speaking. (I’m going to leave to your imagination our reaction to that!) There will be another date set, he will now get the summons to appear. If he skips it the matter will be dissolved and it will be over. Even if he appears, I believe in the officials minds the case is already decided.

God’s Word says in Genesis 50:20:

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive…

We saw how true this is yesterday. The police Chief stood before the people and told them that they had to be saved, in their hearts, to keep them from sinning. To keep them from thieving, lying and hurting others. He told them that instead of looking at what they can get today, to look to their future, at their children and grandchildren’s futures. What happens when we are driven out? What happens when this crop is harvested today and sold tomorrow? Where will you be then? He told them that in six years he is retiring and already he is making plans for his future retirement so that he won’t suffer, his children and grandchildren won’t suffer. He told them there should be no poverty here like there is if they would only be saved and look toward their future and not live for just today and how they can get whatever they can get. We were pretty blown away after he spoke, and thankful to Our Father for the many Saints that have been lifting us up in prayer. Though this situation hasn’t worried us, even at the point where Christian was prepared to go to jail rather than give this guy the bulls back, it has been an annoyance. That puts stress on a body! And it has taken us away from work to be done. Even if ninety-nine people went home and ignored every word he said, I believe that the one that ponders his words will be saved. Of the other ninety-nine seeds were planted, and by someone who is in their eyes a great authority. In Isaiah 55:11, the Lord says:

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

God is in control, ALWAYS, and He has used this situation to strengthen us, strengthened our standing in this community and now in the city. We now have a friend in the Chief of Police! He has brought many people together, and we had a chance to meet many people in the village who now are able to see that we mean to help them. Do I think this ends the dealings with the devil who is behind everything? No, but as each situation arises, as each one strengthens our faith and our resolve, it makes it harder for the devil to succeed in each. It weakens his power over this village, over each person that hears God’s Word.

To be continued……?!
